For some personal shipments, the China customs-clearance process may also require identification documents matching the consignee's name.

If the goods contain batteries, liquids, food, medicine, supplements, cosmetics, automotive parts or other special items, this must be declared before shipment.

What Should I Know About Customs Clearance in China?

A seller agreeing to accept a return does not automatically mean the goods can enter China without customs review.

Even where the shipment is a Taobao or Pinduoduo return, Chinese Customs may still assess the actual product, quantity, value and intended use before deciding how the shipment should be cleared.

All goods must therefore be accurately declared.

Do not intentionally undervalue the shipment, and do not rely only on vague descriptions such as “Gift”, “Sample” or “Return Goods”.

A clear and accurate customs declaration helps reduce the risk of clearance delays, customs revaluation, additional-document requests or return to origin.

Personal Returns and Commercial Returns Are Different

A normal personal return involving one or two e-commerce purchases can usually be assessed as a personal shipment.

However, large quantities of identical goods, multiple cartons of commercial inventory, commercial spare parts, company returns or goods that were originally formally exported from China may require commercial import clearance or a formal returned-goods procedure.

For commercial cargo, the Chinese supplier or consignee should confirm in advance that they can cooperate with import customs clearance.

Do not wait until the goods have already arrived in China before trying to arrange the customs solution.

Airfreight Chargeable Weight

Malaysia-to-China airfreight is normally charged based on the higher of:

Actual weight

Volumetric weight

The volumetric-weight formula is:

Length × Width × Height ÷ 5000

Dimensions are measured in centimetres.

Final chargeable weight and dimensions are based on the actual warehouse weighing and measurement.

Estimated Transit Time

Under normal operating conditions, the estimated transit time from Malaysia to China is approximately:

4–7 working days

Actual delivery time may be affected by:

Chinese Customs inspection;

Delivery to Remote Areas in China

Some addresses in Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu and other remote or border areas may require additional transit time, special transfer arrangements or remote-area surcharges.

Certain remote locations in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Yunnan and other provinces may also require additional checking based on the actual postcode and delivery address.

This does not mean that the entire province is considered remote.

Remote-area status is determined by the actual destination address.

Some of these goods may not be completely prohibited under Chinese law, but they may still be restricted by aviation regulations, quarantine controls, import licensing requirements or the operating rules of the transport channel.

They should therefore not be shipped without prior approval.
